Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

The main benefit of laser hair removal is obvious—less hair to remove at home! It can be used on nearly any part of the body, but most commonly the face, legs, back, underarms, and bikini line. The only places it cannot be done are near the eyes (so no eyebrows) and on a tattoo.

Candidates for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is FDA-approved and safe for most people. Originally, the treatment was only effective for people with light skin and dark hair, as the laser targets pigment. If the hair and skin were too similar in color, there was a risk of damaging the surrounding tissue. But since then, the technology has advanced.

Though the lasers still target the pigment in the follicle, they now do so more efficiently and laser treatments are an option for people with darker skin and those with lighter hair. Our evaluation includes determining if there is enough contrast for the laser to be effective.

Treatment Expectations

Laser hair removal is generally not very painful, but there will be a little discomfort during your treatment, similar to the sensation of a rubber band snapped against your skin. The treatment sessions are short, generally around 20 minutes, and most people tolerate the sensation without difficulty.

Most people who have laser hair removal experience few side effects. Redness is common for a short time after treatment, usually disappearing in a matter of hours. You can generally return to regular activities immediately.

Laser hair removal requires several treatments because different hair follicles are in different stages of growth, and they need to be caught in a certain stage for permanent removal. We usually schedule six sessions, spaced three to four weeks apart. Areas with thicker skin, like the chin and back, may require more treatments.
